Workforce Investment Act (WIA)

What is it?

The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) is a U.S. federal law that was passed in 1998 to allow state and local officials to establish labor training programs and workforce development services using federal job training funds.

Who is it for?

WIA provides workforce development services to employers, workforce professionals, job seekers, students and dislocated workers who qualify. 

How do I qualify?

Individuals who are 18 years and older may qualify if they meet the following criteria:

  • Job seeker has a barrier to returning to a previous occupation or industry due to insufficient skills or limited job availability
  • Laid off from a job
  • Receiving unemployment
  • Job seeker meets requirements established by a local Workforce Investment Board
